This bold, hand-strung necklace, made of oval Peruvian opals, is accentuated with sterling silver daisies and faceted carnelian beads to culminate in a dramatic pendant. The detailed sterling silver focal bead is reminiscent of the facets of a tortoise's "scuta" and suggests a protective shield. The carnelian nugget below with its cascading sterling silver chain elements and dancing carnelians finishes this dramatic piece with lightness and warmth.

Did you know that "Carnelian" is derived from the Latin word meaning horn, in reference to the flesh color sometimes exhibited? It was used widely during Roman times 2,000 years before present era to make signet or seal rings for imprinting a security seal with wax on correspondence or other important documents. Carnelian has the interesting property that hot wax does not stick to it. Approx. 16", adjustable to 19" with a decorative extender chain.

The earrings feature warm orange-hued carnelian drops, daisy-patterned sterling silver accent beads, a turquoise-blue-colored peruvian opal bead and tiny carnelian and red agate accent beads, joyfully dangling from sterling silver earwires.
